By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.’ Luke 1: 78-79
We approach the season of Advent with anticipation, sometimes with anxious joy and at other times with sorrow. This time of the year is just plain hard. Between family gatherings, Christmas concerts and parties filling every possible moment, and wondering about gifts and all the rest, it leaves us feeling exhausted and not at all joyful.
I encourage you to spend some time in the dark this season. I realize this sounds a bit strange but bear with me for a moment. Turn off the lights, the sounds, the smells, and the busy-ness that consumes you and find a place to sit quietly. Close your eyes and open your hearts in prayer. Ponder what it is like to be a people who walk in darkness. Do you feel in control or are you afraid? Who guides you? Who gives you hope? How are you called to walk as a child of the Almighty?
Even with our eyes open, we dwell in darkness. Yet God in his wisdom and goodness sent a Savior who brought the dawn. The light of Christ breaks upon a weary world and we rejoice that in him we are given hope and peace.

Approach this season with your hearts and minds open to the new world that God is creating for you. Though the dark may surround you, the light of Christ shines. May it guide you through all the ups and downs, joys and sorrows of this season.
