When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream. Psalm 126:1
We continue through this season in hope of the time to come. We look to God’s grace and mercy to bring us relief from COVID-19 and the economic and personal hardships we have suffered. I know you are tired. I am too.
This month has always been a time of joy and celebration in anticipation of the birth of our Savior. We sing hymns and anthems celebrating the Angels and all the host of Heaven joining together in adoration and praise. We “Deck the Halls” and our sanctuaries. Our children dress up and retell the story of our Savior’s birth. Women’s groups share special moments around food and service. We imagine the quiet of Christmas Eve illuminated in candlelight as the murmur of “Silent Night” echoes in our souls. Cookies, hot chocolate, and so many wonderful things that only show up once a year hit our palates with delight. Gifts secret and surprising encourage joy and laughter. This is always a wonderful time of the year.
2020 proves to be more challenging for all these and more. We are all working extra hard to recreate this month’s blessing in new ways. Our Advent Theme invites us to be honest about where we are right now. We are like those who dream. We close our eyes and ponder what could have been and what should be. We know that there is nothing perfect in this season.
Yet as we go back to the basics of what this season means, isn’t imperfection the point? It was to an imperfect, weary world that God sent the Son. Not because we would embrace and understand the grace and mercy of Jesus but because we couldn’t. Perhaps this year’s challenges drive us to the Christ Child in a way that other years haven’t.
When all the trimmings are stripped away, doesn’t “God With Us” arrive? Emmanuel comes to earth to set us free! When Christmas doesn’t feel like Christmas, the joy of the Savior’s birth only calls us closer to what is most important. Apart, we gather together to greet the Newborn King. In hope, in glory, in praise we adore Christ the Lord!
May you know peace and joy this Christmas season.
